Montréal is a beautiful city that is easy to reach from the Northeast. It is a perfect short getaway. My husband and I visited during Labor Day weekend. In a quick hour flight or 5 hour drive from the New York area, you will arrive at this European inspired city.
From cuddling up in a cozy hotel to taking in extraordinary waterfront views, Montréal is the perfect setting for a romantic getaway. Clean, safe and charming, this dynamic North American city with a European feel boasts a wealth of attractions for couples.
Explore Old Montreal with its cobbled stone streets, outdoor cafes, bars and trendy shops. Stroll along Saint Paul Street and have dinner at Mondavie. Enjoy a glass of wine and an exquisite duck confit! Place Jacques-Cartier, a public square, might be the busiest tourist space in all of Montreal, full of sidewalk cafes, quick-sketch artists, and street performers with a nice view of the waterfront.
A visit to Notre Dame Basilique is not to be missed. This is one of the most spectacular churches I have ever visited. It is absolutely gorgeous, see pictures below.
Montreal’s public markets feature outstanding local produce. At the markets, farmers and merchants are happy to answer questions or even share advice and recipes. Visit Jean Talon Market, it is the largest in North America!
The Plateau area is the real Montréal. Here you’ll find a community featuring an eclectic mix of artists, students, yuppies, and young families. Round it off with a wealth of interesting shops, cafés, pubs and bars, not to forget black-box theatres, art galleries and gourmet shops, and you’ve got a free-spirited, creative atmosphere where all walks of life converge. Stroll on Mont Royal Avenue and enjoy a very tasty lunch at Les Folies.
Montreal’s Underground City is truly amazing. It is a multi-level network of tunnels and stairs connecting shopping malls, metro stations, offices, schools, hotels, concert halls and pretty much anything that can be found in any big city’s downtown area. The Metro is a great way to get around the city. It was very safe, clean and easy to use.
Majestically rising above the city is Mount Royal. This is a beautiful park perfect for walking and biking. Walk up several hills and many steps to arrive at the very top for stunning views of the city.
I highly recommend a long weekend in Montreal. It is a beautiful city with much to explore including museums, churches, festivals, shops, and outdoor cafes and restaurants with exquisite food. It is experiencing a slice of Europe in a large North American city.
