The view was magical! I could sit at our balcony or outdoor restaurant for hours just taking it all in. It looked like a beautiful postcard. Maybe it's because I had been dreaming about Porto for over a year but I thought it was one of the most spectacular views.
Our hotel was across the river (in my opinion the best place to stay in Porto!). Not only are you away from the hustle and bustle of the busy small city but you get the most magnificent views and are only steps away from the Port houses!
A quick water taxi took us to the main streets of Porto. We took a long stroll, stopped in one of the many cafes and visited some of the main sightseeing spots... Livraria Lello is a beautiful and historic book store. The train station in Porto was also very unique, right in the middle of the city, with beautiful Portuguese tile on the walls.
Interesting fact... port is stored in the port houses here due to the steady temperatures. The Douro Valley, about an hour away, is where the vineyards are and port is made.
A day of wine and port tastings in the Douro Valley... only about an hour from Porto we entered the majestic Douro Valley. It is such a spectacular wine region with the Douro River flowing in between the hills of endless vineyards. I highly recommend you include this in your itinerary when visiting Porto. A couple of winery visits and tours followed by an hour long cruise on the river. It was so incredibly relaxing and picturesque.
I hope you enjoyed my recap of Porto and can see why I had fallen in love with this area of Portugal.
