Have you ever visited a city where you felt you were being transported to another era? That’s what Óbidos did for me… this medieval walled city in Portugal is filled with whitewashed buildings and gorgeous flower trees along its labyrinth of cobblestone streets.
As we were approaching Óbidos I was in awe of this beautiful hilltop town appearing right off the main road. The terracotta roofs line the hills and the wall around it with the castle at the very top was a stunning view. (The castle dates back to the eighth century and is now a boutique hotel.)
Spending a day wandering the streets of Óbidos was magical (and the fact that it was on my birthday made it even more special!). The narrow streets were lined with art museums, a beautiful book shop, and many small cafes and shops carrying everything from wine, chocolate and Portuguese cork products.
I’ll let pictures do the talking this week as I don’t think words can explain the magic and beauty of this medieval town. Be sure to include Óbidos in your Portugal itinerary. Day trips are available from Lisbon but staying overnight will allow you to really take it all in without the crowds.
