The recent terrorist attacks are so horrific and such a tragic loss of innocent lives. But we need to deal with how to cope with this new way of life. I believe these events will continue to occur so we need to psychologically cope with it and not allow fear to take over our lives.
It is heart wrenching that so many innocent lives are being taken at some of the most beautiful cities around the world. However, we run the risk of an accident every time we get into our cars and drive 70 mph on a highway, or the risk that a driver texting hits us as we’re crossing the street.
The way I rationalize is that there are risks in everything we do and I won’t let fear stop me from doing one of the best and most rewarding things I love to do which is to travel.
For those of us who live in the Northeast, we certainly haven’t stopped visiting New York City, which is probably one of the most at risk cities in the world. So why deprive ourselves and our families of the incredible gift of travel?
Living in fear is not healthy for us or helpful for antiterrorism efforts. Understandably, many are cancelling travel plans but there is much less risk in getting on an airplane than there is in getting in our cars everyday!
Living in fear takes a huge toll on our lives. It’s important to be informed but sometimes we need to take a media break. TV images of dreadful events can be overwhelming and watching them repeatedly can really take a toll on us.
Worrying about our safety is completely normal but diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and accidents are among the leading cause of death, not terrorism. It’s important to keep this in mind when fear starts to take over our lives.
Lastly, when it comes to traveling, if you are totally not comfortable with traveling to Europe, there are so many other incredible places to visit around the world and some are right in our own beautiful country… several of my favorites are Hawaii, Costa Rica, Alaska, California, Arizona, Vancouver, and the Caribbean. So don’t let fear stop you from living your life and exploring the amazing world we live in.
