Food and wine experiences are some of our most treasured memories from our travels. So learning about how local foods are made and enjoying delicious tastings are always at the top of our lists.
One of the things Spain is known for is its delicious food (and especially tapas). If you’ve ever visited the country you probably saw whole legs of ham hanging from the ceiling of many stores, cafes, and bars. These ham legs are also served freshly sliced in many restaurants. That famous ham is Jamon Iberico, it is produced of pigs that have had a diet exclusively of acorns. Visit the region of Andalucia and take a private tour of an Iberico producer where you will learn the process of making this fine ham and enjoy some delicious tastings and lunch in the farmhouse.
One of my favorite cheeses is Manchego cheese (readily available in the US). Just about an hour from Madrid the region of the La Mancha is known for its Manchego cheese production and saffron. How about a visit to an artisanal Manchego cheese producer for an in-depth look at how this delicious cheese is produced?
About two hours north of Madrid you come to La Rioja wine region. This is a beautiful region with rolling hills of vineyards and beautiful medieval villages. Visit private family owned wine estates built centuries ago. Learn about the history and culture of wine as you indulge in private tastings and a lovely picnic lunch. The medieval walled village of Laguardia, has an underground labyrinth of some 300 family-owned wine cellars!
