CROATIA'S WORLD HERITAGE SITES

Did you know Croatia has 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites? A World Heritage site is a landmark or area which is selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as having cultural, historical, scientific or other form of significance, and is protected by international treaties. This tiny country is a little over 20k square miles (about the size of West Virginia!), and it has so many spectacular places and natural beauty. During my recent trip to Croatia we were fortunate enough to visit 3 of the 9 UNESCO sites...

Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park... This spectacular park has 16 turquoise blue lakes with waterfalls separating the upper and lower lakes. A wooden walkway winds through the park allowing visitors to walk alongside the lakes and stunning waterfalls. Boats run between some of the lakes to give you the opportunity to explore even further. The park is located just under 3 hours from Split. To explore the park you can stay at hotels nearby or stop in for a few hours when traveling between cities.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Old City of Dubrovnik... Dubrovnik is one of the world's most magnificent walled cities, encircled by massive stone walls from the 16th century. As recently as 1991, the city sustained damage from a war but it has been completely restored. Dubrovnik lies on the Adriatic Sea and offers spectacular scenery and remarkable history. The massive wall wraps all around the city with a backdrop of the most beautiful blue sea.

Poreč, Croatia

Episcopal Complex of the Euphrasian Basilica... Located in the lovely city of Poreč, this basilica is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. The cathedral was built in the 6th century and the inside is decorated with famous mosaics which are conserved beautifully. Poreč is a lovely coastal town located in the northern region of Croatia.
