Japan is a land of contrasts—where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with futuristic innovation, where serene temples stand alongside bustling city streets, and where every moment feels like an invitation to slow down and savor the beauty of the present.

For a first-time visitor, planning the perfect trip can feel overwhelming. But after my recent journey through Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, and Osaka, I’ve crafted an itinerary that captures the essence of Japan—without feeling rushed or overwhelming.

Here’s how I would design the perfect 10-night itinerary for a first time visit to Japan:

The first gate at Meiji Shrine in Tokyo, Japan

Nights 1-5: Tokyo

Start your journey in Tokyo, a city where ancient shrines and cutting-edge technology coexist in harmony. Explore the vibrant neighborhoods—Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ginza, and Asakusa—and don’t miss iconic sights like Meiji Shrine, Senso-ji Temple, and the teamLab Borderless digital art museum.

Tokyo is also a culinary paradise. From humble bowls of ramen to Michelin-starred omakase and even the surprisingly delicious egg salad sandwiches at 7-Eleven, you’ll find extraordinary flavors everywhere. Consider a sushi-making class, a guided visit to Tsukiji Outer Market, or even a go-kart adventure through the city streets for a truly unforgettable experience.

Tokyo is a city that can’t be rushed—between the 13+ hour time difference (depending on where you are in the US), the endless neighborhoods to explore, and the culinary experiences, five nights is the minimum I recommend for a first-time visit.

Nights 6-7: Hakone

After the buzz of Tokyo, unwind in Hakone, a serene escape known for its natural beauty, hot springs, and spectacular views of Mount Fuji. Take a scenic cruise on Lake Ashi, ride the Hakone Ropeway, and enjoy a soak in an onsen. Staying in a traditional ryokan adds an authentic touch—complete with tatami mats, kaiseki dinners, and that sense of peaceful simplicity Japan does so well.

The beautiful torii gates to Fushimi Inari Shrine

Nights 8-10: Kyoto

Next, head to Kyoto, where time seems to slow down. Immerse yourself in the beauty of ancient temples like Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) and Fushimi Inari Shrine with its iconic torii gates. Wander through the historic Gion district, known for its teahouses and geisha culture, and perhaps enjoy a traditional tea ceremony or kimono experience.

Beautiful gardens at Osaka Castle, Japan

Day Trip Option: Osaka is just a 30-minute train ride away—perfect for a fun day trip to explore Dotonbori’s neon lights, try local street food like takoyaki and okonomiyaki, and visit Osaka Castle and its spectacular gardens.

Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan

Super Nintendo World Fans: If you or someone in your family is a die-hard fan, I highly recommend adding a couple of extra nights to stay in Osaka and be able to fully enjoy Universal Studios Japan. Super Nintendo World is super cool and an immersive adventure that deserves more than a rushed visit!

Departure

An easy train ride takes you back to Tokyo for your nonstop flight home, or extend your journey to explore more of Japan’s diverse regions—each offering its own unique charm.
