Beyond the Traditional Safari: Unique Experiences in Africa

Africa offers far more than a traditional safari. While seeing wildlife in its natural habitat is often the reason travelers first dream about an African journey, some of the most memorable experiences happen beyond the game drives. From exploring Cape Town and South Africa’s wine country to visiting local villages, gliding through the Okavango Delta by mokoro, taking a safari by boat, or ending your journey on one of Africa’s beautiful islands, there are countless ways to experience this diverse continent.

This year, my husband and I are celebrating 30 years of marriage.

Thirty years brings a lot of different chapters, and travel has been woven into so many of ours. We traveled before having kids, then with our boys creating wonderful family memories, and eventually found ourselves entering an entirely new stage of life: becoming empty nesters.

One of our first big trips as empty nesters was to Africa.

It was a journey I had dreamed about for years, but I don't think I fully understood how memorable it would be until I experienced it for myself. Of course, seeing wildlife in its natural habitat was extraordinary. But what surprised me was how much more there was to the experience.

The landscapes. The people. The food and wine. The cities. The conversations with local guides. And that unmistakable feeling of being somewhere completely different from home.

Africa became much more than a safari destination for me.

And that is something I want travelers considering Africa to understand. A safari may be the reason you first start dreaming about Africa, but it doesn't have to be the entire trip. Some of the most memorable African journeys combine wildlife with cities, culture, food and wine, time on the water, and a few days on a beautiful island.

Here are some of my favorite ways to experience Africa beyond the traditional safari...

African Cities

A thoughtfully designed African itinerary doesn't have to begin and end in the bush.

Cape Town is the perfect example. It combines dramatic natural beauty with sophisticated hotels, excellent restaurants, art, history, neighborhoods worth exploring, and easy access to the coast and the spectacular Winelands.

Discover South Africa’s Wine Country

For travelers who appreciate wine, food, and beautiful hotels, South Africa's Cape Winelands deserve their own place on an itinerary.

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek offer historic estates, vineyard-covered landscapes, outstanding restaurants, and some exceptional wines.

Rather than rushing through on a day trip, I prefer giving the Winelands a couple of days. Stay at a beautiful property, visit carefully selected estates with a private guide, enjoy a leisurely lunch, and allow yourself to experience the region rather than simply taste a few wines and move on.

It is also a perfect example of why Africa works so well for travelers with varied interests. You can spend several days on safari and then find yourself surrounded by vineyards and mountains enjoying an entirely different side of the continent.

Visit Local African Villages and Communities

A thoughtfully arranged village or community visit can offer an opportunity to learn about local traditions, daily life, crafts, food, and history directly from the people who live there.

The key is how the experience is arranged. I look for experiences that feel personal, respectful, and connected to the community rather than staged for tourists. With the right local partners and guides, these encounters can become some of the most meaningful moments of the entire journey.

They also remind us that Africa's greatest stories are not only about its landscapes and wildlife. They are about its people.

Glide Through the Okavango Delta by Mokoro

One of the most distinctive experiences in Botswana is exploring the Okavango Delta by mokoro, a traditional canoe designed for navigating its shallow waterways.

Instead of the sound and movement of a safari vehicle, you are quietly gliding through channels surrounded by reeds, grasses, and water.

The perspective is completely different.

You begin noticing smaller details. Birds overhead. The movement of the water. The sounds around you. Perhaps wildlife along the banks.

It is quiet, intimate, and one of those experiences that makes you appreciate just how varied a safari can actually be.

African Safari by Boat

In destinations such as Botswana, water can become part of the wildlife experience. Depending on where you stay and the season, you may head out by boat to explore rivers and channels, watching wildlife from an entirely different perspective.

There is something extraordinary about seeing elephants near the water, watching hippos from a safe distance, or simply sitting quietly as the landscape passes around you.

Boat safaris can also provide a welcome change of pace during a longer safari itinerary. The experience feels less like searching for wildlife and more like becoming part of the landscape.

For travelers who worry that several days of traditional game drives may begin to feel repetitive, this is exactly why choosing the right combination of camps and regions matters.

After early mornings and adventure, there is something wonderful about ending an African journey with some down time on an island.
