In today’s world, planning a vacation often begins with a Google or AI search. A few keywords, a list of “top” results, and suddenly it feels like the decision has been made for you.
But when it comes to luxury travel, this is where many travelers are steered in the wrong direction.
Luxury is not about what appears first in search results. It is about how a place feels, how it is run, and whether it truly aligns with your travel style, expectations, and pace. And that is something no algorithm can accurately determine.
Here are two real examples from my travels that illustrate why relying on Google or AI alone can lead to disappointing experiences.

When "Luxury" in Botswana means very different things...
If you search “luxury safari camp in Botswana,” one name will almost always rise to the top: Jack’s Camp.
I recently visited Jack’s Camp. While it is an iconic property with a long history, I can say confidently that it is not a good fit for many of my clients.
The camp felt very old and dark. The furnishings showed noticeable wear, and the overall atmosphere lacked the refinement most luxury travelers expect today. The food was far from the best I experienced in Botswana, especially when compared to other camps that excel in both quality and presentation. Service, which is such a defining element of a luxury safari, felt inconsistent and underwhelming.
For the right traveler, perhaps one who values nostalgia over comfort, it may still appeal. But for clients who expect polished service, elevated design, and a seamless experience, I would hesitate to recommend it.
Google and AI tools cannot tell you that and plan a luxury vacation the right way. Firsthand experience can.
The Reality Behind a “Luxury Hotel” in Seville...
Another common example appears when searching for luxury hotels in Seville, Spain. Hotel Alfonso XIII almost always dominates the results. It is undeniably beautiful and architecturally impressive. However, during my visit, the experience told a very different story.
The hotel was extremely busy, filled with large tour groups arriving by bus. The lobby was crowded, check-in lines were long, and the atmosphere felt hectic rather than refined. For my clients, who value privacy, calm, and a sense of place, this is not the experience I want them to have.
Luxury is not just about a grand building. It is about how the hotel functions day to day and how it makes you feel when you walk through the door.
Again, Google and AI cannot show you that.
Why Search Engines and AI Fall Short
Search results prioritize visibility, popularity, and marketing strength. They do not account for how places feel. They cannot assess whether a lodge feels intimate or impersonal, whether service feels warm or transactional, or whether a property attracts the right type of guest for you.
AI tools can quickly summarize options, but they cannot replace judgment shaped by firsthand visits, trusted local relationships, and a deep understanding of how different travelers experience luxury.
When planning a customized luxury vacation, details matter. Who else will be there. How the space flows. How attentive the service feels. Whether the experience aligns with your expectations, not just the label of “luxury.”
