Best Day Trips from Madrid
Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain. It is an elegant, vibrant, and dynamic city, known for its rich history, cultural diversity, and lively atmosphere.
Spending several days exploring Madrid’s neighborhoods, parks, and museums is a must. But the city is also strategically located in the center of Spain making it a great base to explore nearby towns. Below are some of my favorite day trips from Madrid.
Best Day Trips from Madrid...
Toledo
Known as the City of Three Cultures for its historical coexistence of Christians, Muslims, and Jews. Toledo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its medieval architecture with cathedral, fortress, and synagogue. Toledo can be reached by train or car within an hour from Madrid.
Segovia
Famous for its well-preserved Roman aqueduct, Segovia is a picturesque town with a fairy-tale castle, the Alcázar, and a stunning Gothic cathedral. The medieval streets and views are magical. After strolling the city, you must try Segovia’s most well-known dish - cochinillo asado or roast suckling pig. The fast speed train takes 30 minutes from Madrid to Segovia.
Cuenca
Recognized for its hanging houses perched on the edge of cliffs, Cuenca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral of Cuenca and the hanghing houses (Casas Colgadas), are among the must-see attractions. There is a fast speed train that gets you there in an hour.
Salamanca
A bit further from Madrid, Salamanca is a university town with a rich history. The Plaza Mayor, Salamanca Cathedral, and the University of Salamanca, one of the oldest universities in Europe, are key landmarks to visit. The fast speed train takes 1 hour and 40 minutes.
